We all know that it's about survival of the fittest. Even children learn from a very young age that it's important to win, to be the best, and as parents the "winning is not what is important, it's about playing the game" speech often does not sound very convincing to our own ears. Competitiveness as a personality trait is definitely more defined in some people, and surely it can be be traced back to our inborn instinct to survive. 2,000 years ago it may have been about the fastest and most skilled hunter getting the food, but today it's about the best paid job, the biggest house, the fastest car. The bigger is always better, get more, more more ... That's the jungle of modern day life, but then we're sort of missing the point, aren't we? Let's not lose sight of the bigger picture. 3 May 2011: What's new on TravelPeople

What will people come up with next? In Finland they have an annual contest to see how far they can throw mobile phones. Now I appreciate that sport brings people together and that it creates a sense of belonging, but somehow I can't see myself getting excited and cheering on my favourite contester while sitting next to the 'mobile phone throwing' field ... Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Nokia's international headquarters are based in Finland or that it's their way of recyling mobile phones, who knows? I suppose we should just be thankful that they are not throwing switchboards or fax machines. I sure can't wait to see what added feature they next invent for mobile phones, but I better keep up with evolving technology! 15 April 2011: TravelPeople feeling good this week

Winning the battle of the bulge has become an impossibility with all the Easter egg displays everywhere. You get confronted with them around every corner and the promise of sweet indulgence wrapped invitingly in bright coloured paper is enough to let anyone with a sweet tooth fall into a pothole of weakness - and allow all resistance to crumble ... Please know that I'm only speaking for myself, but resisting the temptation until it goes away is totally incomprehensible, and I often blame my poor mother for restricting me to two blocks of chocolate a day, creating an ongoing craving in the process. I am too busy living life to have to worry about calculating calories, which I realize is not going to enhance my look today - International Cleavage Day. But then at least I'll have an overload of endorphins or 'feel good' hormones in my system - which sounds good to me!
