Competitiveness as a personality trait is definitely more defined in some people, and surely it can be be traced back to our inborn instinct to survive. 2,000 years ago it may have been about the fastest and most skilled hunter getting the food, but today it's about the best paid job, the biggest house, the fastest car. The bigger is always better, get more, more more ... That's the jungle of modern day life, but then we're sort of missing the point, aren't we? Let's not lose sight of the bigger picture. What will people come up with next? In Finland they have an annual contest to see how far they can throw mobile phones. Now I appreciate that sport brings people together and that it creates a sense of belonging, but somehow I can't see myself getting excited and cheering on my favourite contester while sitting next to the 'mobile phone throwing' field ... Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Nokia's international headquarters are based in Finland or that it's their way of recyling mobile phones, who knows? I suppose we should just be thankful that they are not throwing switchboards or fax machines. I sure can't wait to see what added feature they next invent for mobile phones, but I better keep up with evolving technology! Winning the battle of the bulge has become an impossibility with all the Easter egg displays everywhere. You get confronted with them around every corner and the promise of sweet indulgence wrapped invitingly in bright coloured paper is enough to let anyone with a sweet tooth fall into a pothole of weakness - and allow all resistance to crumble ... Please know that I'm only speaking for myself, but resisting the temptation until it goes away is totally incomprehensible, and I often blame my poor mother for restricting me to two blocks of chocolate a day, creating an ongoing craving in the process. I am too busy living life to have to worry about calculating calories, which I realize is not going to enhance my look today - International Cleavage Day. But then at least I'll have an overload of endorphins or 'feel good' hormones in my system - which sounds good to me! This long weekend I will be exercising my basic human right to eat, drink & sleep! I often realize that, to enjoy life, all you have to do is to return to the basics - the most obvious can often be the most pleasurable. With all our human complexities, we all strive towards simplifying our lives - to absorb what is really important and to let go of the rest. But as we get older, the more difficult it becomes to let go of the excess as we have already created a big chunk of our own history - and sometimes history can be a heavy excessive weight to carry. It's amazing how people's senses differ. One person may have a stronger sense of smell while another person's sense of hearing is stronger. I am convinced that most young kids have a stronger sense of taste as most of them detest any unusual or strong foods, but their sense of hearing is another story ... I was taught that procrastinating was an evil, habit forming action (or non-action for that matter) and something to steer clear of at all costs. Why didn't I pay better attention? It's one of my favourite pass times! Putting things off can easily become second nature and before you know it, you turn into a constantly worried little stress ball - totally self-inflicted! It's always easy to say that you operate better when under stress, when there is a sense of urgency, but don't be fooled - it's just an excuse. It's just so easy to postpone doing the boring, mundane stuff, but it's usually those things that take up the most time. So without any further dawdling, I have decided to eliminate most of the stress in my life and stop procrastinating! [They say practise makes perfect]. World Kindness Day was on 13 November. Isn't it sad that a specific day has to be dedicated to being kind? We live in an "every man for himself" world, so I suppose it is important to remind people to be kind to one another. But even if you are genuinely kind to someone, it may not be perceived that way as the receiver of kindness often becomes suspicious of ulterior motives. Now that's sad! Maybe I'm being naive, but kindness should come naturally and if it doesn't - it can be practised! Studies have shown that practising kindness is good for our mental and physical health - and it's contagious! Apparently our personalities also change over time so that we become nicer from the age of 30 onwards -less neurotic, more warm hearted and more responsible. So there is hope for all! Don't you sometimes wish that your life had a built-in PVR? With your own personal video recorder, you would be able to press pause in "real time" on your own life's remote control whenever you needed some time out. They say that patience is a virtue, i.e. an asset or a good quality. I couldn't agree more, in fact I believe that it is something that one can cultivate and practice, but sometimes having patience is merely impossible! Often when our patience is tested, we are caught off-guard and regardless of our best intentions, we just lose it ... Traffic often is one of the worst culprits. Aren't you happy that you were not part of the 120 km traffic jam into Beijing recently where people were stuck for days on end? I don't think breathing techniques and counting to 20 would quite do the trick in a situation like that! I have heard that Chinese people are very patient, but I think that just takes the cake! Even as a child myself, I thought it to be quite laughable. How can you lead if you don't lead by example? (I'll have to remind myself of this next time my child loses his temper ...) And so say all of us! Have you ever noticed how a flock of sheep always run in the same direction? Most people prefer to blend in with the crowd and not stand out - to conform to the norm so to speak. It makes things easier if we conform to a group because it enhances a sense of belonging which is good for morale. Yes, many studies have been conducted about how beneficial it is for an individual to feel and be part of a group, whether it be in a social or professional context. They say you should count sheep if you can't fall asleep. Luckily falling asleep has never been a problem of mine, it's more the sleeping through until the alarm goes off that keeps on sidestepping me ... It all has to do with cats and the nocturnal mischief they get up to, as well as the over-active imaginations of young children. At least my sleeplessness has a known cause - with a known effect of grumpiness the next morning! Apparently insomnia is 41% more common in women than in men. This to me makes a lot of sense as women multi-task all through the day and therefore it's more difficult to "switch off" all the different parts of the brain at night. If only we could have gone into hibernation like some animals and sleep all through winter. Now that would have been grand in this icy Cape Town weather! But before my sleep deprivation has you all nodding off to sweet lalaland, grab a cup of coffee and have a look at how http://www.travelpeople.co.za/ can perk you up this week!

In my books happiness equates to achieving balance in life. And yes, I think that you will agree that finding balance, but above all maintaining it is quite an achievement! When I was younger, I used to enjoy living life to the extremes - either going all out, or not doing it at all. Now that I'm older (and hopefully a bit wiser?), I find myself constantly striving towards finding a balance between the different parts that make us tick as human beings - the physical, physiological, emotional, mental etc. If one part is neglected, the world just doesn't feel right, but if they are all in zinc, everything works like tick, tock and the world is a happier place (especially after a rejuvenating weekend in Greyton!) Hey, no-one ever said it would be easy or uncomplicated - all we can do is just keep trying! Competitiveness sometimes really bring out the worst in people. It's often those friends that you don't want to be seen with at sports games - especially if their team is busy losing... They jump up and down, blood red in the face, waving a fist in the air, shouting - usually at the referee who gets blamed for all sorts of things, including incompetency. Nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition I say, but is it really worth it getting your blood pressure up & your heart racing? What an experience! Being at the first Cape Town World Cup game at the Greenpoint stadium with 48, 000 something other spectators was truly an unforgettable experience. Choice is a wonderful thing unless you have trouble choosing. And here I'm not talking about someone like my husband who, as a Gemini, finds it difficult to sometimes not change his mind about things, but about having so many different choices that it complicates your life. Yes, choice is liberating, but having too many choices can be confusing! Life was so much simpler in our grandparents' day when you had a choice between buying a black car (probably a Ford) or buying a white one (probably a Ford); or deciding whether you wanted just butter, just jam or both on your sandwich. If you want to see just how confusing choice can be today, all you have to do is send a five year old into a shop and tell him he can choose any one sweet he likes ... It is human nature to want it all! No wonder we feel more discontent with life than our grandparents used to feel - the more choices we have, the bigger the sacrifice if we can only have one! Living every day being consciously grateful can make life so much more pleasant. Yes, I know it's not always possible, but it's definitely worth trying and it's a way of thinking that, maybe if practised, could become a habit. An announcement from Lynne:
It is with great pride, excitement and happiness that I can announce that Louise Kilian, my most able assistant of over 6 years has bought shares in TravelPeople.

As you may or may not know, Louise has effectively been running the administration side of the business and some of the workshops for over 4 years. She is so capable and efficient, that I have never had a day's concern. In fact she has most often been the oar that has steered the boat.

From now on in, Louise will be totally responsible for the booking and overseeing of the workshops, while I take on the more mundane stuff and the occasional workshop when we are under pressure. However neither of us will ever be further than an email or a phone call away from you, and will always have your best interests at heart. We both thank you for your continued support and look forward to working with you for a long time to come.

I am sure you join me in wishing Louise everything of the best for a wonderful future. She is Special People!

How quickly the memory of a long weekend fades ... I had the pleasure of spending two glorious nights at the Quarters Hotel in Hermanus, but after spending four hours in traffic back to Cape Town on Monday and hitting the floor running on Tuesday, it all feels like a distant dream. I still consider myself to be extremely fortunate as I had the opportunity to not only "return to my roots" but to also spend time totally living in the moment! Again I realized just how difficult this is in everyday life and actually how important it is for one's vitality and sense of well-being. I think Mr. Mohr Keet who, at the tender age of 96 bungy jumped this week, should share his secret with us. Sometimes it strikes me just how much us human beings are creatures of habit. Have you ever found yourself ordering the same dish at the same restaurant over and over again? Physiologically our bodies get into a rhythm as far as our sleeping patterns go and most people's body clocks are totally impaired if they travel over time zones, but if we look at our daily routines & habits, it's actually quite amazing how easily we can be thrown off-track. Just take long weekends as an example - suddenly having a three day weekend totally threw me! Not to sound ungrateful, but gone was my balance and I'm still struggling to remember what day of the week it is! That's probably why they say small children feel more secure if their parents keep them to a certain routine. Or maybe I'm just getting old & I just like the predictability of it all ... The Year of the Football on TravelPeople

Lu has been very ably corresponding melodic thoughts to you for the past month or two. This week old 'grumps' is back and is asking "is our local media scoring an 'own goal'" with all the hype about over-pricing for the football?

While it is a serious concern the reporting needs to be accurate. I have a friend who firmly announced that the cost of his flite to Upington in February had doubled due to the world cup! My immediate reaction was 'duh'!. On pondering it a bit I realised this is a 'Joe Public' reaction, [he is from the corporate world, not the travel industry]. This is the reaction to what he is reading or hearing about the world cup, and Joe Public is who we are trying to attract to the event. Are we doing ourselves big disservice? The newspaper info I have read, is in the main, full of innuendo and hype that means absolutely nothing if the full article is read. Are all our newspapers becoming tabloids? Sad really!

In a perfect world we should all be honest, thoughtful and caring in all our dealings with each other, be it clients, suppliers, friends or family. Trying to fly in under the radar nearly always ends in crash and burn! It is always a good idea to think things through to the possible end and consequences - [sage words from the 'knee-jerk-reaction queen!]. We are going to welcome some extremely wealthy people who can afford anything, but in the main we are trying to attract just ordinary people who have to count their pennies like the rest of us. Lets make them welcome and show them a good time!

So while I am in Lecture mode!

Okay, I get the idiom "as scarce as hens' teeth" because as far as I know chickens don't have teeth (except maybe on that advert on TV), but where does "the bee's knees", "the best thing since sliced bread" (what was the best thing before sliced bread?) and "by the skin of your teeth" come from? The English language truly is fascinating. We use these phrases on a regular basis and we all understand their meaning, but often their origins are untraceable. The jury is still out on quite a number of these phrases, but it's probably best not to hear it straight from the horse's mouth - we may just lose our marbles! I sure am glad that I live in South Africa and not the U.K. where you could get fined for blowing your nose at a red traffic light! Yes, a man was fined recently in the U.K. for blowing his nose while stationed in his car at a red traffic light (with his hand break on) as he apparently was not in full control of his car. Now, have you ever! Talk about control freaks ... I realize that there is a lot to be said about safety on South African roads, but that is honestly taking it a tad far. Judging by the way drivers behave on my route every morning, we would probably have no cars left on the road. I probably wouldn't make it out my driveway!
