I'm starting to get quite used to only applying my mind for four days a week, but I'll probably wake up with a bang in two weeks' time and realize that we are already heading towards the half-year mark! 24 March 2010: TravelPeople - a good habit

Sometimes it strikes me just how much us human beings are creatures of habit. Have you ever found yourself ordering the same dish at the same restaurant over and over again? Physiologically our bodies get into a rhythm as far as our sleeping patterns go and most people's body clocks are totally impaired if they travel over time zones, but if we look at our daily routines & habits, it's actually quite amazing how easily we can be thrown off-track. Just take long weekends as an example - suddenly having a three day weekend totally threw me! Not to sound ungrateful, but gone was my balance and I'm still struggling to remember what day of the week it is! That's probably why they say small children feel more secure if their parents keep them to a certain routine. Or maybe I'm just getting old & I just like the predictability of it all ... Nevertheless, on www.travelpeople.co.za you always get what you expect and we would love to think that we are cultivating your weekly habit of reading all about what we have to offer ...

The Year of the Football on TravelPeople

Lu has been very ably corresponding melodic thoughts to you for the past month or two. This week old 'grumps' is back and is asking "is our local media scoring an 'own goal'" with all the hype about over-pricing for the football?

While it is a serious concern the reporting needs to be accurate. I have a friend who firmly announced that the cost of his flite to Upington in February had doubled due to the world cup! My immediate reaction was 'duh'!. On pondering it a bit I realised this is a 'Joe Public' reaction, [he is from the corporate world, not the travel industry]. This is the reaction to what he is reading or hearing about the world cup, and Joe Public is who we are trying to attract to the event. Are we doing ourselves big disservice? The newspaper info I have read, is in the main, full of innuendo and hype that means absolutely nothing if the full article is read. Are all our newspapers becoming tabloids? Sad really!

In a perfect world we should all be honest, thoughtful and caring in all our dealings with each other, be it clients, suppliers, friends or family. Trying to fly in under the radar nearly always ends in crash and burn! It is always a good idea to think things through to the possible end and consequences - [sage words from the 'knee-jerk-reaction queen!]. We are going to welcome some extremely wealthy people who can afford anything, but in the main we are trying to attract just ordinary people who have to count their pennies like the rest of us. Lets make them welcome and show them a good time!

So while I am in Lecture mode!

What this means: if you lose the information on an invite - it's on the blog, if you don't receive our friendly, happy, weekly newsletter for any reason - it's on the blog! If you have friends who want to know about it - you got it - it's on the blog!


If you are not receiving an invitation to our workshops it could be because:

• your server was down when the invite was sent
• your server has considered us spam because this is a BIG mailing list - you need to 'white list' us with your server to correct this or - guess what? Visit our BLOG!
• we don't know where you live. The invites only go out to people where the city the function is being hosted.
• you are not a buyer - sadly we cannot offer sellers a free lunch and an opportunity to promote their products at the exhibitors expense. You do understand we know this, and wouldn't like it to happen to you.

10 March 2010: TravelPeople and the fascinating stuff

Okay, I get the idiom "as scarce as hens' teeth" because as far as I know chickens don't have teeth (except maybe on that advert on TV), but where does "the bee's knees", "the best thing since sliced bread" (what was the best thing before sliced bread?) and "by the skin of your teeth" come from? The English language truly is fascinating. We use these phrases on a regular basis and we all understand their meaning, but often their origins are untraceable. The jury is still out on quite a number of these phrases, but it's probably best not to hear it straight from the horse's mouth - we may just lose our marbles!
