25 November 2010: TravelPeople takes action

'Procrastination' is one of the first "big" words I learnt as a child. I was taught that procrastinating was an evil, habit forming action (or non-action for that matter) and something to steer clear of at all costs. Why didn't I pay better attention? It's one of my favourite pass times! Putting things off can easily become second nature and before you know it, you turn into a constantly worried little stress ball - totally self-inflicted! It's always easy to say that you operate better when under stress, when there is a sense of urgency, but don't be fooled - it's just an excuse. It's just so easy to postpone doing the boring, mundane stuff, but it's usually those things that take up the most time. So without any further dawdling, I have decided to eliminate most of the stress in my life and stop procrastinating! World Kindness Day was on 13 November. Isn't it sad that a specific day has to be dedicated to being kind? We live in an "every man for himself" world, so I suppose it is important to remind people to be kind to one another. But even if you are genuinely kind to someone, it may not be perceived that way as the receiver of kindness often becomes suspicious of ulterior motives. Now that's sad! Maybe I'm being naive, but kindness should come naturally and if it doesn't - it can be practised! Studies have shown that practising kindness is good for our mental and physical health - and it's contagious! Apparently our personalities also change over time so that we become nicer from the age of 30 onwards -less neurotic, more warm hearted and more responsible. So there is hope for all! May we all be inspired to display pure, undiluted kindness to everyone that crosses our paths. And on http://www.travelpeople.co.za/ this week, there is a lot of kindness going around!

We all the know the story about the rabbit and the tortoise who decided to race against each other. Don't you sometimes wish that your life had a built-in PVR? With your own personal video recorder, you would be able to press pause in "real time" on your own life's remote control whenever you needed some time out. Or you could press rewind on a Sunday evening to go back to Friday afternoon - or even delete when you found yourself in an unpleasant situation! Imagine if we could do that! Things could end up quite messy, and one would probably experience moments of total memory loss - as well as de ja vu! So maybe it's not such a great idea, but just imagine ... And so say all of us! Have you ever noticed how a flock of sheep always run in the same direction? Most people prefer to blend in with the crowd and not stand out - to conform to the norm so to speak. It makes things easier if we conform to a group because it enhances a sense of belonging which is good for morale. Yes, many studies have been conducted about how beneficial it is for an individual to feel and be part of a group, whether it be in a social or professional context.
