Respect is something we all deserve, but it's not something we should expect as a given. Past generations strongly believed that respect is something that needs to be earned, and in my mind that carries a lot of weight, but to be treated with respect by fellow human beings should also be a fundamental human right. Maybe I am confusing admiration with respect. You don't have to admire or even like someone to treat them with respect - it's the little things that matter. One can show respect in the way you greet someone, or in the way that you dress for a meeting, or even by merely acknowledging the presence of street vendors instead of pretending that they are not even there.
